Two wrongs don’t make a right

In the fallout of the recent outage at a major cloud service provider, the blogosphere has produced gems like this and this, which essentially boil down to

  • I think that some technology is somehow involved in this,
  • therefore, that technology must have contributed to the outage.

Wikipedia has interesting articles on both points:

  • Assumption is defined as a proposition that is taken for granted, as if it were true based upon presupposition without preponderance of the facts.
  • Non sequitur is defined as argument in which its conclusion does not follow from its premises.

Seeing both fallacies presented in the wild in such little space, in combination with “here’s how the big boys do it” arrogance, is positively amusing. Thanks to the authors for brightening up my day.
